Shrimp, Crab and Artichokes Au Gratin


1/4 cup butter
1/2 pound fresh mushrooms sliced
1 clove garlic, minced
2 tablespoons finely minced shallots
1/4 cup flour
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/4 teaspoons salt
3/4 cup milk
2 1/2 cups grated, sharp cheddar cheese, an Italian cheese blend can also be subbed in instead
2/3 cup dry white wine
1 pound fresh crab meat cooked
1pound shrimp, cooked
1 14.5 ounce can artichoke hearts
2 tablespoons breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon butter melted
Optional: Seasonings of your preference


Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit

Melt quarter-cup of butter in skillet; add mushrooms, garlic and shallots and sauté for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in flour, pepper, salt and milk. Slowly bring to a boil while stirring, then remove from heat.  Add half cup of cheese and stir until melted. Stir in wine. Combine sauce, crab, shrimp, artichokes and remaining cheese. Pour into buttered two-quart casserole dish. Combine breadcrumbs and melted butter and sprinkle on top of casserole. If extra seasonings are desired, such as dill, mix them with breadcrumbs. Top with remaining cheese, bake uncovered for 30 minutes.
